  9. WhereIsIt? was designed with a single goal in mind - to create an easy-to-use,
  10. but powerful media catalog program, made to make our lives easier. Familiar
  11. and simplified user interface, extensive search capabilities and archive file
  12. support, combined with powerful report generator and compact, but rich in
  13. details database, all that should bring you the ultimate tool to handle your
  14. software collection.

  16. WhereIsIt? is a shareware software. See ORDER.TXT for more information on how
  17. to register this program. Be sure to read carefully the LICENSE.TXT file
  18. before using the program. The unregistered version imposes some limitations to
  19. the user, which are removed by registering the program. More information about
  20. these limitations can be found later in this document.

  23. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

  49. Where is it? supports any media type Windows can use, including diskettes,
  50. CD-ROMs, removable disks like iomega Zip, hard disk, network drives etc.
  51. It will recognize and collect useful data for most of them, too. Also, it
  52. is compatible with all Windows-supported file systems, including FAT, FAT32,
  53. and NTFS.

  57. Logical organization of databases, based on one or more catalogs. Each
  58. catalog can easily be transferred as a single file to another computer, a
  59. friend, a public forum...  Small catalog-file size, with approximate usage
  60. of 1 MB for 30.000 files and folders (that's about 5 fully filed CD-ROMs).
  61. Internal database structure optimized for very efficient access and small
  62. total size. Single-file, transferable catalog storage makes sharing your
  63. data easy.

  67. Fast and easy access to every item's detailed properties, from wherever you
  68. are. Want to get item's description? Just leave mouse pointer on it for a
  69. moment, description will popup as a tool-tip!.

  71. Detailed info with descriptions

  73. Detailed info on every object in the database (files, folders, disks,
  74. catalogs,...) each capable of accepting up to 4000 characters of description
  75. text. Each file or folder can have assigned user-defined category or up to
  76. three flags.

  78. Importing descriptions, plugins, help with describing items

  80. Auto-importing and exporting descriptions from 4DOS/NDOS, FILE_ID.DIZ,
  81. FILES.BBS, 00INDEX.TXT,... description files, even if they are compressed
  82. inside zip, arj,... archive files! It can also import data about some
  83. special file types, like EXE programs and system libraries descriptions,
  84. CD-ROM audio tracks, WAV and MP3 file info etc. WhereIsIt's own open
  85. standard Description API allows you to add your own description plugins
  86. and extend WhereIsIt's description importing capabilities. There is also 
  87. a Description Assistant, interactive tool to help you describe your folders, 
  88. based on special (custom defined) description files like FILE_ID.DIZ or 
  89. read-me files.

  93. Handling of most compressed file formats on media scan, including ZIP, ARJ,
  94. RAR, CAB, LHA/LZH, TAR, ARC, ACE, ZOO, GZ, SFX... Compressed archive files 
  95. can be presented as folders, showing their content. Archive files can be 
  96. extracted right out from WhereIsIt? to any folder, and a file compressed 
  97. inside archive file can be viewed or launched with associated program with 
  98. one click!

  100. Powerful searching finds what you need

  102. Powerful multi-threaded searching, with detailed settings on what to search
  103. for, where to search and how to search. Use either Quick Search to quickly
  104. find your items by name or description, or start up the Advanced Search with
  105. Search Expression Editor, allowing you to write complex search queries using
  106. full set of available search criteria and Boolean logic operators.
  107. Searching for duplicate items is there, too, as well as analyzing how data 
  108. has changed since last cataloging, or checking if older or newer versions of 
  109. files are present somewhere in the catalog.

  113. Adjustable and powerful report generator adds a final professional touch to
  114. your catalog collection. Export your data to ASCII file, Excel table, rich-

  116. the Microsoft Fax, after previewing it on full-screen, with adjustable zoom.

  131. MULTI-LANGUAGE SUPPORT
  132. ======================

  134. This program supports selecting one of prepared languages to be used in
  135. program's user interface, and even preparing language files for currently
  136. unsupported languages (read more about this in program's help file).

  138. Please note that regular shareware version is only shipping with English
  139. and German language file by default, to save on download size. Many other
  140. languages are available and can be downloaded from program's home page on
  141. the Internet.

  143. If, for any reason, you would like to switch back to default English language,
  144. and are unable to do so in program because you can't understand or correctly
  145. display currently selected language, you can run the program from command line
  146. with this special parameter:

  148. WhereIsIt.exe /English
  149.  
  150. This will effectively run the program with English language, ignoring current
  151. language setting in the program.

  154. UNREGISTERED VERSION LIMITATIONS
  155. ================================
  156.  
  157. Unregistered version of WhereIsIt? has build-in some limitations in order to
  158. encourage registering this software. All of the following limitations are
  159. removed when program is registered using given serial number and registration
  160. code. For more information on how to register please read the ORDER.TXT file.
  161.  
  162. - Catalog capacity is limited to total of 2 GB data storage, You will not be
  163.   able to add more data in the catalog, if the total sum of all media
  164.   capacities in the catalog already exceeds this limit. If you want to add
  165.   more data, you will have to open a new catalog.
  166.  
  167. - Only one catalog can be opened at the time. If you would like to work with
  168.   another catalog, you must first close the current one.
  169.  
  170. - Auto-loading catalogs on program startup is disabled. Registered users can
  171.   setup a list of catalogs to automatically load when program is starting, or
  172.   select to open all catalogs that were opened in the last session.
  173.  
  174. - All reports will include a visible message saying they were generated with
  175.   unregistered version.
  176.  
  177. - Tips on program startup can not be disabled in the unregistered version. The
  178.   first tip will always remind you that you are working with an unregistered
  179.   program.

  182. REGISTRATION BENEFITS

  185. After receiving the license fee, as stated in ORDER.TXT file, each registered
  186. user in entitled to:
  187.  
  188. - Personal registration code, to unlock current and all future versions of
  189.   the program.
  190. - Optional program delivery on 3.5" disks or CD-ROM, for additional payment of 
  191.   $5 USD for shipping and handling.
  192. - Free technical support via e-mail for a period of six months.
  193. - Clean conscience if using program for more than 14 days.

  195. Registration benefits can be suspended if registered user had violated
  196. license agreement, for example by distributing his personal registration
  197. data to other unlicensed users in any way.

  200. DISTRIBUTION
  201. ============

  203. Evaluation versions of WhereIsIt? are distributed as Shareware. This means
  204. that users are encouraged, subject to restrictions described in the License
  205. Agreement, to share copies of this program with friends, associates and
  206. bulletin boards. Please remember that if you use this software you are
  207. required to pay the registration fee of $30 as described in the License
  208. Agreement (LICENSE.TXT).
